Games That Provide Cognitive Training And Entertainment For Dogs

Giving your dog cognitive training games is a great way to provide mental stimulation in addition to physical exercise! Cognitive training games will improve your dog’s intelligence, overall quality of life, and provide a great bonding experience.

Benefits

Cognitive training (CT) for dogs involves solving puzzles and finding solutions to sharpen their mental abilities. This helps dogs focus on constructive activities rather than acting out when bored or barking excessively. CT can be a helpful way to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. CT offers a positive distraction for the dog and includes treats and praise when they successfully complete a puzzle or problem. It can also slow down dogs that eat too quickly, teach impulse control to hyperactive dogs, and help them adjust to new and scary situations.

10 Games That Can Sharpen Your Dog’s Cognitive Skills

Consider your dog’s size, temperament, and abilities when selecting a method:

  • Treat balls are hollow balls that can be filled with delicious treats like kibble or peanut butter. They serve as simple cognitive games that can keep even picky dogs entertained as they work to get to the tasty reward inside. These toys also provide exercise as dogs push or nudge them around, and they promote healthy teeth and gums.
  • Cognitive puzzles for dogs come in trays that have compartments and niches designed for dogs to nudge, twist, tap, remove, or spin in order to uncover and release hidden treats. These trays come in various shapes and sizes, each with its own set of unique challenges. You can also create a DIY puzzle tray by placing tennis balls inside of a cupcake pan with treats hidden beneath some of the balls for your dog to discover.
  • Playing hide-and-seek is a fun game you can enjoy with your dog. You can either hide your pooch’s toy or hide yourself. This game can be played both indoors and outdoors. To make it more challenging, involve more players. To give your dog a fun cognitive training game, try taking a walk on a new route that has different sights, sounds, and smells than your usual route. Let you dog explore the areas that capture their attention the most.
  • Switch out their toys regularly. Remove the toys they are more accustomed to and substitute them with new ones. By doing this, your dog will remain interested. Reintroduce old toys occasionally to keep the rotation going.
  • Design an obstacle course. Include hurdles, tunnels, balance beams, and various obstacles for the dog to navigate. This will make for an enjoyable challenge that exercises different joints and muscles. To keep things interesting, change up the order of obstacles from time to time.
  • Engage your dog in a treasure hunt by hiding treats in various places, allowing them to use their sense of smell to discover every treat. Hide some treats in plain sight and others in more challenging places.
  • Play the cup game. This involves hiding a ball or treat under one cup while moving several other empty cups around for distraction. First, show your dog where the treat or ball is hidden, then mix up the cups multiple times to see if they can find it. If they succeed, they get the reward.
  • Include fun tricks in your dog’s training. You can teach your dog to balance a treat on their nose to increase their patience and focus, catch a frisbee to improve coordination, or try more advanced tricks such as jumping rope for increased exercise and training.
  • Give their toys different names and train them to fetch each toy when called by its name. You can give rewards for correct responses and vary the order you request toys each time you play to keep your dog challenged.

Whichever methods you choose, remember to enjoy the process and have fun with your BFF! Already tried some of these methods or know of others we haven’t listed? Share in the comments below!
