Appreciation to the Licensed Veterinary Technicians

Today marks the beginning of Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) Appreciation Week, and I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the veterinary technicians I’ve had the honor of working alongside throughout my career.

For those who may not be familiar, veterinary technicians are licensed professionals who play a critical role in the care and treatment of our animal patients. Much like Physician’s Assistants in human healthcare—though often with broader responsibilities and less recognition—veterinary technicians perform essential tasks that keep every clinic running. From examining patients, drawing blood, and performing lab diagnostics to administering anesthesia, implementing treatments, and maintaining detailed medical records, veterinary technicians are the backbone of veterinary medicine.

Most veterinary technicians start as veterinary assistants and some continue on to earn their doctorate in veterinary medicine. Regardless of where they are on their journey, they are united by their deep compassion for animals and an unwavering commitment to patient care. These dedicated professionals serve as caregivers, animal handlers, counselors, and often manual laborers—all in one. Their profession is demanding, filled with emotional highs and lows, and it requires immense skill, resilience, and heart.

I hold tremendous admiration for the veterinary technicians I’ve worked with over the years. Though too many to name individually, I want each and every one of you to know how deeply I appreciate your contributions. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and your impact is immeasurable.

With sincere appreciation and respect,
Dr. David H. Morris
